Dry skin results from a lack of moisture and oily substances on the skin. The skin produces sebum, an oily substance, through sebaceous glands to the outer surface, which serve as barriers to the skin. Sebum prevents the drying out of skin surfaces, leaving them hydrated and soft.

However, sebum production can be inadequate in some persons, as is the case with hypothyroidism and Diabetes.

Many factors lead to skin dryness. In this article, we’ll discuss factors that affect skin dryness. But, most importantly, we’ll give you tips that will help you get rid of dry skin.

Bathe with Warm Water Often

To treat dry skin, you can start by bathing with warm water. However, we strongly advise that you cease from taking your bathe with hot water. Hot water deprives the skin of sebum, which can trap moisture, leaving your skin dry and cracking.

Your best bet is to bathe with warm water. Warm water removes dirt from the body, but it cannot scrap sebum on the skin. Also, we must mention that when you bathe with warm water, you should have your bath for 5-10 mins.

Cleanse Your Face Gently

Although skin dryness can occur on any part of the body, it is more common on the face, hands, and legs. So, we’ll be writing this section to help you treat dryness on the face, hand, and leg.

When you wash your face with warm water, you must pat your face dry gently. Also, avoiding soaps containing deodorants and anti-biotics would be best – deodorants and antibiotics can irritate the skin. Your best bet is to use soaps that contain ceramides.

Shave Gently

Shaving can irritate the skin, especially if the hair is dry. You can decide to use shaving creams or gel before you shave to reduce irritation.

Aside from irritating, shaving can also make your skin dry because it scraps sebum off your body. Your best bet is to shave immediately after you shower. And it would be best if you shaved gently with a sharp razor.

Get a Humidifier

Dry air is a common cause of dryness on the skin. Because of the low relative humidity that accompanies dry air, moisture evaporates from the skin, making it dry and scaly. Therefore, if you do not use a moisturiser or oily face cleanser, you must avoid dry air as much as possible.

In cases where the weather is dry {during winter}, and you cannot avoid dry air, you can use a humidifier. A humidifier is a device that helps maintain the environment’s relative humidity by adding moisture. Using a humidifier can prevent crack and dryness on the skin.

Use Oils Rich in Vitamin E

Oils that are rich in vitamin E can prevent irritation and dryness of the skin when used properly. However, for proper use of these oils, you must use them some minutes before birth.

Before using a facial oil, you must ensure you clean your face with warm water, pat dry it, and then wipe it with a clean towel. Next, apply the oil to your face, leaving it to absorb into the skin for 20 minutes before bed.
