Terror Attack at Brussels Airport and Metro station: 28 dead and many injured

Brussels has been hit hard by three explosions after terrorists attacked the airport and metro.

Shots were fired and a suicide bomber struck at Brussels’ Zaventem airport, and arabic words were shouted before two blasts were heard near the American Airlines check-in desk. Passengers were seen fleeing for their lives shortly after 8am local time.

IN a separate attack just an hour later, an explosion occurred at the Belgian capital’s Maelbeek metro station.

Explosions ripped through the departure hall of Brussels airport, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 30 others, while another blast struck a metro station in the capital shortly afterwards, reportedly killing 15 people and wounding 55 others.

The deadly explosions at the airport were carried out by a suicide bomber, Belgium’s federal prosecutor said, broadcasters VTM and RTBF reported.

The Belga news agency said shots were fired and there were shouts in Arabic shortly before the blasts at the airport at 8am on Tuesday, local time.

The blasts at the airport and metro station occurred four days after the arrest in Brussels of a suspected participant in the November militant attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Belgium has raised its terror alert to highest level possible after the attack. Security has been raised at London airport, frankfurt airport in germany and security enhanced in France.

Australian foreign minister Julia Bishop says DFAT is seeking to determine if any Australians have been affected in the attack.

200 flights into Brussles Zaventem airport have been diverted following the series of bomb attacks and the Transport network across Europe have been shut down.
