It feels like Brisbane has truly hit its stride this year. There’s a palpable buzz in the air, a feeling that something exciting is always just around the corner. As a long-time local, I’ve always loved our city’s vibrant energy, but the last month has felt particularly special, and the calendar for the rest of this month is already jam-packed. And if that wasn’t enough to get excited about, the recent program launch for this year’s Brisbane Festival has me counting down the days until September.
A May to Remember: Footy, Festivals, and Fanfare
Looking back, May was an absolute whirlwind of activity. The city kicked off the month with the incredible NRL Magic Round at Suncorp Stadium. Even if you’re not a die-hard rugby league fan, the atmosphere across the city was electric. I spent the weekend dipping in and out of pubs around Caxton Street, and the friendly rivalry and shared excitement were infectious. It’s moments like these when Brisbane feels like the centre of the sporting universe.
On the cultural front, I made sure to catch a show during the final weeks of the Brisbane Comedy Festival. It’s always a highlight, and this year’s program was bigger and better than ever, taking over venues like the Brisbane Powerhouse and The Tivoli. I saw a fantastic set from a local up-and-comer that had me in stitches. A personal favourite memory was enjoying a pre-show drink as the sun set over the river at the Powerhouse – there’s something about the fairy lights twinkling on the water that makes the whole experience magical.
And who could forget the Paniyiri Greek Festival at Musgrave Park? The air in South Brisbane was filled with the irresistible scent of grilled octopus and honey puffs. I spent a delightful afternoon there, Zorba dancing with complete strangers and indulging in way too much delicious food. It’s such a wonderful celebration of our city’s multicultural fabric.
June’s Delights: From West End Musicals to Scenic Rim Feasts
The energy hasn’t waned in June. For those who love a bit of drama and sparkle, TINA – The Tina Turner Musical has been electrifying audiences at QPAC. I haven’t managed to get tickets yet, but a friend of mine went and said the lead performance was simply breathtaking, capturing the raw power and emotion of the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. With 23 of her iconic hits, it’s no wonder the show has been receiving rave reviews.
For the foodies, the Scenic Rim Eat Local Month has been a delicious excuse to escape the city and indulge in the incredible produce on our doorstep. I took a drive out last weekend and was reminded of just how lucky we are to have such a rich food bowl so close by. The program is packed with over 100 events, from long lunches at picturesque wineries to hands-on farm experiences. I highly recommend taking a look at their calendar and planning a day trip; it’s a perfect winter warmer.
And for a dose of wonder, the Wonderstruck exhibition at QAGOMA has been a fantastic, free way to spend an afternoon. It’s a captivating journey through large-scale installations and intricate treasures. I was particularly mesmerized by Nick Cave’s Heard, a collection of vibrant horse soundsuits. It’s an exhibition that truly sparks the imagination and is a must-see before it closes.
A Sneak Peek into September: The Brisbane Festival Unveiled
But the news that has really set tongues wagging is the recently unveiled program for the Brisbane Festival (5-27 September 2025). As the city’s premier arts and culture extravaganza, the anticipation is always high, but this year’s lineup, the final one from Artistic Director Louise Bezzina, feels particularly ambitious and exciting.
The Grand Opening and Dazzling Skies
The festival will kick off in its signature spectacular style with Riverfire by Australian Retirement Trust on Saturday, 6th September. It’s a night I never miss. There’s nothing quite like the collective gasp of the crowd as Foti Fireworks unleashes a symphony of colour and sound from bridges, barges, and rooftops. My tip is to find a spot at one of the many riverside parks like South Bank or Wilson Outlook Reserve, pack a picnic, and make a day of it.
Adding to the aerial spectacle is the return of the much-loved drone show. This year, Skylore — Nieergoo: Spirit of the Whale will see hundreds of drones take to the skies above the Brisbane River to tell a powerful First Nations story of culture, country, and connection. With multiple sessions nightly from September 25th to 27th, there will be plenty of opportunities to witness this moving display.
A Nocturnal Wonderland and Concerts Under the Stars
One of the new highlights I’m most looking forward to is Afterglow in the City Botanic Gardens. Replacing the previous Lightscape installation, this world-premiere experience is being described as a magical after-dark journey along a 1.4km trail of fire sculptures, candlelit installations, and dancing shadows. It sounds like a truly immersive and beautiful experience for all ages, perfect for a unique date night or a family outing.
For the music lovers, the Night at the Parkland series at Roma Street Parkland is boasting an incredible lineup. Kicking off the festival are iconic acts like Icehouse, Lime Cordiale, and Xavier Rudd. The following weekend will see superstars Amy Shark and Grinspoon take to the stage. An outdoor concert under the stars on a balmy September evening? Yes, please.
It’s this incredible mix of free and ticketed events, of massive public spectacles and intimate performances, that makes the Brisbane Festival so special. It truly takes over the city, transforming familiar spaces into stages for creativity and wonder.
So, while there’s still plenty to see and do in Brisbane this month, the excitement for what’s to come in September is palpable. It’s a wonderful reminder of just how dynamic and culturally rich our city is. I, for one, can’t wait to dive in and experience it all
